Instagram Investigating After Insect Exposed Email Address of High-Profile Users

“We recently unearthed  that one or more people obtained access that is unlawful a number of high-profile Instagram users’ contact information,” the company stated in a statement.

Instagram is notifying its verified members that one or more individual exploited a bug in its system to access contact information for its users that are high-profile.

The Facebook-owned company said Wednesday in a statement that it has currently fixed the bug and will run a research into the matter. It further said that no account passwords were exposed in  the breach, which allowed for email addresses and phone numbers to be accessed.

“We recently found  that one or more individuals obtained illegal use of a quantity of high-profile Instagram users’ contact information — specifically email address and phone  number — by exploiting a bug in an Instagram API,” the statement read. “No account passwords had been exposed. We fixed the bug swiftly and are running a comprehensive research.”

It continues: ” Our concern that is main is the safety and security of our community. At this true point we think this work ended up being geared towards high-profile users therefore, out of an abundance of caution, we are notifying our verified account holders of this problem. As constantly, we encourage individuals to be vigilant about the protection of their account and exercise caution if they encounter any activity that is suspicious as unrecognized incoming calls, texts and email messages.”

Instagram remains investigating the event and isn’t disclosing which accounts might  have been impacted. The photo- and video-sharing app is favored by numerous actors, musicians and models. Selena Gomez is currently the most-followed in  the platform with 125 million followers. Other top-Instagrammers who are verified by the app consist of Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber.

Earlier this week, the account belonging to Gomez had been hacked and posted nude photos of Bieber, her ex-boyfriend. The account is now back up and running.
